This book and the one that follows, L Estate degli Inganni, are must reads for those interested in Italian history, the end of the fascist period in Italy, students and those interested in WWII, and the Allied invasion of Italy during that conflict I hope they are being translated into English They are also good reads for anyone who is pleased by a story powerfully well told and full of suspense and interesting characters from beginning to end.The editors claim that these two novels invent a new way to tell history I suppose they are correct in that I do not remember having read anything quite like them.Briefly the method Battista follows is to give a day by day account of the period beginning Wednesday, June 23, 1943 and ending on Sunday, September 12, 1943 It covers that period in Italy when the leading fascists have realized that the Axis is losing the war, that Italy is poorly prepared to continue the war as they are out of material and money, that the Allies are preparing to invade Italy, and very importantly that the Italian citizens have lost all enthusiasm for the war and are not interested in continuing it It is during this period that Mussolini is asked by the King to resign after he lost the support of the Grand Council fascist and taken prisoner by the Carabinieri with the support of the new government essentially Badaglio, the new prime minister and the king with full support of the Army It ends the day that Mussolini is abducted by the Germans in a daring raid on his mountaintop place of imprisonment. It is obvious that Battista has read and digested a great volume of material from the historical records, histories available of the principal characters and events, as well as daily newspapers of the era, flyers, texts of surrender agreements to which the Italians agreed, and so on It is thru these records of the events and when they happened that the author builds his book For example the initial scene takes place at one of Hitler s retreats in the Bavarian Alps called Berghof in which there is a meeting of top German military and other Nazis The author introduces us to some of the characters, all real people, by telling a bit about what they have done, what they are noted for, and what others of their peers have said about them Hitler himself is present and a part of the scene as it unfolds in which he shows his irascibility, unpredictability and giveness to rants Following, still on the same day, is a brief notation from the concentration camp of Birkenau in which the births of two Gypsy children are recorded and receive numbers to identify them The next scenery, longer, still on the same day, is the one in which a woman intelligence official of the British identifies from aerial photos a missile and its placement in its site in Germany Any knowledgeable reader knows that this missile will eventually prove deadly to British citizens In succession follow scenes in Germany in which Albert Speer is the actor, in Italy where a leading statesman Bastianini always opposed to the war is introduced having a conversation with an Italian general who gives him the news that either Italy gets out of the war or all is lost Still on the same day there is a note written by a German officer saying that Mussolini is still for the war but overvalues the strength of his army, this followed by a meeting in which Churchill learns that Roosevelt wants a private meeting with Stalin, followed by the musings of an old Italian military commander and Fascist believer full of fears for the future of the outcome of the conflict, and finally the day ending with a meeting between the young American mafioso Lucky Luciano and an old capo Mafia held in a prison in Sicily engineered by the US government Luciano is there to get a list of contacts throughout Sicily of capo mafiosi Here, the reader with some historical knowledge will recognize that this is part of the pre invasion effort of the US military to secure allies and help in making the population amenable to the invasionSo, the books continue in this manner, finally building up a great feeling of suspense Though the reader knows the ending already, that Mussolini will be deposed, that he will be taken prisoner by the new government, the use of available historical record to record a day by day account with the deeds of the actors involved described matter of factly with some minor references to character involved, one is able to experience history as happening in real time and is able to suspend what one already knows and wait for the ending with anxiety and tension.I note that the writer is a noted writer of dramas for television, It shows in these novels I had the impression that a good director could take these pages exactly as they are written and make a great film, including the dialogue given by Battista It would make great cinema.
